In December of 2023, Colin set out to traverse 715 miles from the Hercules Inlet to the South Pole in record time, hoping to become the fastest in history to complete the route. After nearly losing his life to a crevasse fall, Colin abandoned his expedition to return home. On January 11, 2024, Vincent Colliard reached the South Pole in 22 days, 6 hours and 8 minutes, beating the previous world record by nearly 2 days.
Fastest South: Antarctica speed record attempt for the 715-mile route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole.
Antarctica 2023/24
The History
Antarctica has beckoned explorers since Ernest Shackleton's famed 1914 voyage. In 2011, Norwegian polar explorer Christian Eide set the speed record for traversing from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole in 24 days, 1 hour, and 13 minutes—a record no one had since bested.
The Stakes
Antarctic expeditions come with immense risks: temperatures plunging dozens of degrees below zero, relentless winds and whiteouts, and treacherous ice shelves with crevasses hundreds of feet deep. What’s more, this record attempt would also be another race against famed French explorer, Vincent Colliard.
The Crevasse
Just four hours into his journey, Colin fell into a crevasse and nearly lost his life. Partially upside down, he clawed at the icy walls inching his way back from the depths of the darkness. With sheer resolve and strength, he pulled himself out, narrowly escaping a deadly fate.

"Antarctica has this mythic weight. It resides in the collective unconscious of so many people, and it makes this huge impact, just like outer space. It’s like going to the moon."
